The menisci are the two C-shaped pieces of cartilage that run along either side of the knee, acting as a cushion between the shinbone and the thigh bone. If the knee twists or rotates forcefully, the meniscus can tear, resulting in impaired mobility, swelling, and pain in the knee. When a meniscus tear is caused by a sudden stop or impact, the tear usually occurs immediately, however symptoms don’t always appear until up to 24 hours later. Severe pain and swelling are usually the first to appear, followed by difficulty walking and difficulty straightening the leg comfortably.
If the meniscus tear develops due to repeated stress or a degenerative condition, the pain will usually develop gradually along the meniscus over time. When the meniscus does tear, the patient will likewise experience difficulty walking and swelling or stiffness in the knee.
