Commercial insurance / Self-pay rules
In North Carolina, Direct Access rules allow patients to be seen for physical therapy without a prescription. The only caveats are that the physical therapist may not manipulate the spine without a prescription, and the therapist must refer the patient to a physician or dentist if the condition is beyond what can be treated by physical therapy.
Medicare rules
Medicare requires a signed plan of care for physical therapy. Your Luna therapist will create a plan of care during your first visit, and the Luna team will work with your doctor to get it approved. You will need a new plan of care established every 90 days or 10 visits whichever is sooner.

Is in-home physical therapy covered by insurance?
Luna accepts many insurance plans, and we handle the benefits verification process for you. With Luna, you always pay the same exact co-pay your insurance plan has for visiting a PT clinic. We accept all major insurance and Medicare.
Do I need a prescription (referral) to see a Luna physical therapist?
In most cases, you will not need a referral for physical therapy. Some insurance providers do require a doctor’s referral, and we’ll promptly let you know if that’s the case with your insurance. Read more about prescriptions.
When and where can I have my appointment?
Appointments for private physical therapy at home are available 7 days a week, from 6:30 am - 8:30 pm. We make it hassle-free to complete your full course of care by having your Luna therapist come to you. In general, our therapists treat patients at home. See our clinic comparison chart.
Can I see the same physical therapist every session?
We strive to have a single therapist work with each patient for their entire course of care. In very rare cases, your scheduling priorities may require adjustments, but you’ll always know who is seeing you for your appointment in advance.
